The Mother’s Flower Garden aims to be a serene, meditative, and inspiring place, where the intention is to grow 898 varieties of flowers that The Mother has given significance to, with their vibrant colors, fragrances, shapes, sizes, and unique energies. It would like to serve as a space for learning, growth, and deep self-connection through the spiritual essence of the plant world.
The garden was inaugurated on the auspicious date of The Mother’s birthday, 21. Feb. 2022, when a first meditation was held on about five acres of land near Solar Kitchen in Auroville. Since then work has been going on in a dynamic and steady manner.
The journey is long and beautiful and the realization of the entire garden will take time to manifest in its fullest potential. However, with the support and goodwill of many well-wishers and by The Mother’s Grace, things are proceeding well.
The year 2018 saw Auroville commemorate its 50th birthday on the 28th of February. A handful of Aurovillians, came together with a quiet aspiration to offer something to the Mother for the occasion.
Naturally drawn to flowers, the group decided to organize a flower exhibition in Savitri Bhavan that was titled the Divine Flowers Exhibition. It was their humble gift to the Mother on this auspicious occasion.
Richard and Kailash-ben from the Ashram guided the young aspirants in all details, holding their hands and supporting their work. Gradually, a select group of individuals — Shraddhavan from Savitri Bhavan, Narad, Kiran-di, Lipi-di and Monoj-bhai, all from the Ashram, also emerged as guiding and motivating figures, having deep a bonding with flowers and The Mother.
This inspired the group to organize flower exhibitions regularly. As the team shared their love and passion for the flowers, their passion grew and the response from the community was also very encouraging.
Very soon the idea of having a flower garden hosting all the flowers The Mother has given significance to emerged. Work started in that direction without delay, by submitting the application for the project and working closely with TDC (Town Development Committee).
The team is grateful to the community of Auroville and to the Auroville Foundation for the invaluable support extended without which this could never have manifested.
It is only by the grace of The Mother that the project moved so fast, from the first exhibition in 2018 to actually acquiring the land and inaugurating it in year 2022.
What inspires the team to go on with this, busy as they may be with so many other things in Auroville?
Connecting with the beauty and vibration of flowers and reflecting on the significance given to them by the Mother, one can journey into Integral Yoga directly, like a Sunlit Path. This is the possibility that the team would like it to offer to all.
The Mother loved flowers and distributed them generously to all her disciples, and through them She passed on Her force and her blessings, as flowers are very open to the Divine and each of them carries a special vibration.
This is what she says about flowers:
Happy is he who can exchange his qualities with the real qualities of a flower…I give you flowers so that you may develop the divine qualities they symbolize.
The garden aims to be self-sustaining, organic, focusing on conserving water, recycling resources, and using the latest sustainable practices. Rainwater harvesting is a key feature, and the garden design maximizes the use of available resources.
The initial focus will be on growing 75-80% of the flowering plants and trees suitable for Auroville's climate. The remaining 20-25%, requiring special care, will be cultivated in greenhouses in later phases.
Flowers grown in the garden will be offered to Matrimandir, Savitribhavan, Bharatnivas and to other services in the community, particularly on special occasions and celebrations.
The Mother loved children as much as she loved flowers and spent a lot of Her time in the Ashram encircled by them. She guided the teachers very closely on how to engage with the children.
Integral Education as envisioned by Her is taking a stronger hold in the world today.
The Mother’s Flower Garden would like to offer such a space to children who belong to the future. By choosing their own projects and working hands-on in the garden, children will be supported to develop holistically; understand how nature works and connect to the Artist behind all creation.
It will also be a place where children can learn the spiritual significance given by The Mother to the flowers easily, and contemplate on what it means to them by connecting directly to the flowers with all their senses.
Regular Flower exhibitions and various events will be hosted in the garden. Thus the opportunity to engage with the garden, each according to his own nature, and grow with it, will be open to all the community members and people of goodwill from all over the world.
Volunteering in the garden and helping with the work is one more way for people to develop a deeper understanding of the flowers.
For the first time in Auroville, and probably in the world, all the flowers The Mother has given significance to will be housed in one place. This is a very big and ambitious project that needs to be developed in phases.
With a very creative partnership with Ovoide Atelier, based in Pondicherry, the team is working on the garden design consisting of a guest house for those who would like to immerse in the world of flowers, multipurpose space for various activities and garden landscaping.
The project started small, with whatever funds the team had and what was received from friends, and well-wishers. A quiet and stable financial support coming from those l individuals committed to the cause has helped the work to continue. Deep gratitude for that. But the project is big and additional support through CSR funds and donations will carry the project a long way.
